The central driven clarifiers are continuous flow circular tanks provided for removing settleable solids. The effluent is conveyed to the centre of the tank by a feed pipe passing above the water level and turning downwards to discharge into a circular deflector box which creates an even radial flow into the body of the tank.
The deflector box deflects the incoming effluent downwards thus avoiding the tendency of the liquid to short circuit turbulence and directly traverses towards the overflow weir.
The gravity force causes the solids to settle down. The sludge settles down and with the help of the scraper mechanism the same is collected at the centre of the tank. When it accumulates at the bottom valve on the sludge line is opened to discharge it to the sludge drying beds.
